Protection

Morning and Evening Adhkar

By far the

There are two kinds of protection that a person can do for themselves, and a third kind that someone else does for a person if they are unable. Protection before something happens and they are affected (preventive protection) and protection from the effects of something that already happened. A third kind is when they are unable to remove the effects and need outside help from someone who follows the sunnah (hadith istarqu).

Being affected means if someone is possessed by jinn, or magic (sihr), or the evil eye.

Du`a of protection to prevent being affected by magic/possession/evil eye

The most effective way is to perform the following adkhar in the morning and evening every day, no matter the circumstances. It is recommended that these be recited right after performing Salat al-Fajr and Salat al-Maghrib respectively.

Ayat al-Kursi (1 time)

Surat al-Ikhlas, Surat al-Falaq, and Surat an-Nas (3 times each)

Hasbiallahu … End of Surah Taubah (7 times)

Bismillahilladhi (3x)

A`udhu bi kalimatillahi … (3x)

Subhanallahi wa bi hamdihi `adada khalqihi, wa riDa nafsihi wa zinata `arshih, wa midada kalimatih (4x)

Extra, but also important:

O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this life and the next. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allah, veil my weaknesses and set at ease my dismay. O Allah, preserve me from the front and from behind and on my right and on my left and from above, and I take refuge with You lest I be swallowed up by the earth.’

Du`a of protection from jinns residing in bathrooms and other filthy places

Zaid b. Arqam narrated that the Prophet (saws) said:

These fields (that they used as toilets) have jinn in them. If you want to use them, say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from all the unclean and filthy things (or male and female jinns).” (an-Nasa’i 19)

The transliteration of this du`a is: “Allaahumma innee a`oodhubika min al-khubuthi wal-khaba’ith.”

Protecting oneself from the worsening of effects of shaytan or evil eye

First, rely upon Allah by taking the means yourself. This is more effective than having someone else recite upon you. This is because there is nothing between the affected person and Allah; no other person has this privilege.

To remove and reject the effects, see the Treatment page.

Recite Ayat al-Kursi on themselves and blow on their body. In addition, one can recite any of the ayaat from PAGE LINK, or even any other ayaat from the Qur’an.

Protection for the night

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi before going to bed is a protection and a means of keeping the jinn away until the morning (source hadith).

Transliteration: Allaahu laa ilaaha illa huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoom. Laa ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa laa naum. Lahu maa fis-samaawaati wa maa fil-ard. Man dhal-ladhi yashfa`u `indahu illa bi idhnih.

 Seeking refuge in Allah

Khaula bint Hakim Sulamiyya reported:

I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When anyone lands at a place, and then says:” I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He has created,” nothing would harm him until he marches from that stopping place. (Muslim 2708)

The transliteration of this du`a is: A`oodhu bi kalimaatillaahit-taammaati min sharri maa khalaq.

This du`a is also a more general protection from any kind of harm and it is advisable to make it a part of one’s daily wird.
